Datameer Blog

Thanks For Everything, Joe

By on March 13, 2015

Joe NicholsonWith great sadness, a heavy heart and many tears I have to inform you that our good friend and colleague Joe Nicholson has passed away. He fought the good fight until the very end trying to overcome skin cancer.

Joe was the first business leader that joined our company in December 2010 as VP of Marketing. Before Joe, we were just a bunch of wild engineers coding away.  Joe believed in our vision early on. Following his lead, we designed and implemented the foundation of what Datameer is today.

Joe was an amazing leader and a wonderful friend to me. He always found the right words in the brightest and in the darkest hours. He was an incredible leader. He built amazing teams, motivated everybody around him and always produced amazing work. I was a student of Joe’s and I’m deeply saddened that I can’t keep learning from his wisdom – I could really use his help around handling stress with more compassion – as he always did.

Joe Nicholson is a huge role model for me and I know he left a lasting impression on many of you in the industry as well.

For years Joe commuted to our offices from Santa Cruz – driving 2 hours to the office and driving 2 or more hours back. He didn’t miss a single day until he just couldn’t do it any more.

Knowing that Joe invested his last years with us makes me sad but also proud. He believed in our vision and we absolutely owe him to deliver on that.

In lieu of flowers, Joe’s family has requested donations be sent to the CPMC Foundation for Melanoma Research, which is where Joe received treatment. Please make checks payable to CPMC Foundation and send them directly to:

Additionally, for anyone who would like to share some fond memories with his wife and two daughters, please send your thoughts to jnicholson@datameer.com and we will ensure they get them.

We’ll miss you Joe.
