Strata + Hadoop World 2012 — Data Science FTW

By on October 29, 2012

It’s no surprise that this year’s Strata/HadoopWorld conference sold out since we all know Big Data is all the rage. But in the sea of people walking through the halls, what was surprising was the amount of students attending the conference.  Sure, there is a huge demand for qualified workers and universities around the globe are creating data science programs to fill the gap.  But who has time to wait for the first batches of newly minted data scientists to hit the job market? At Strata, the consensus was clear. Like Bruno Aziza pointed out in this Forbes article, we need “to move the Big Data game from the land of data scientists into the hands of regular business people.”

The question is how, and vendors at Strata took a collective step forward with an astounding amount of news, each focused on making some elements of Big Data faster, easier, or more powerful. Businesses and brands will surely benefit from the developments unveiled at Strata, but in my opinion, Data Scientists gained just as much last week, if not more.

Prior to Strata, the companies with the most dollars to throw at the problem were the ones fortunate enough to land a data scientist. But between EMC & Kaggle’s news of connecting Data Scientists to companies in need via Chorus, and our news that Data Scientists now have a place to package and sell analytic applications at the Datameer Analytics App Market, the current supply of Data Scientists can now help more businesses than ever before. Finally, there’s a place businesses can go to download data science, and data scientists get paid every time their application is downloaded.

Speaking with business users, IT and data scientists at the conference, I was ecstatic to see their eyes light up with enthusiasm as I explained what the app market offers and the potential it can provide them.  It’s truly a win-win-win for everyone involved.

No doubt, the conference was a huge success, but all told, I’m looking forward to attending an even bigger Strata/Hadoop World next year. We can’t wait to see what data scientists and businesses make of the marketplace a year from now.
