Big Data & Brews: How the Formation of the Universe Ties into Big Data

by on Jan 15, 2018

Vijay Narayanan leads the algorithms and data science efforts in the Information Management and Machine Learning group in Microsoft. But, that’s not how he got his start in big data analytics. It also wasn’t his first exposure when he worked at Yahoo! Labs, or even when he worked at Fair Isaac, which is one of the pioneers of building analytical products – they developed the FICO credit score, which has been around for more than 40 years as the gold standard for credit risk.

Nope, he trained as a professional astronomer. He got his Ph.D. in astrophysics building computational models in order to understand the structure of the universe. Now, that’s big data.
