A Hadoop Community Success: Elephant Orphanage Update

By Stefan Groschupf on November 21, 2014

A year ago we announced that we were donating 100 percent of our proceeds from our Datameer Charity Edition for the month of November to help rescue and rehabilitate elephants orphaned by the illegal ivory trade and release them back into the wild.

One year later, we are extremely happy to share that we have our first update of what our donations of $10,000 have achieved! One expert predicts that elephants could be extinct by 2025. With the growth of the Hadoop market expected to reach over $50 billion by 2020, it has been inspirational to see the Hadoop community come together to help the very animal that now serves as our famous logo.

With our donations, Game Rangers International (GRI) has been able to do the following with the Elephant Orphanage Project (EOP):

— GPS tracking for Chodoba (the largest elephant in the EOP herd) to better understand his movements as he starts interacting more frequently with wild elephants
— Upgrade the Elephant Boma – Kafue Release Facility to accommodate two more elephants
— Upgrade the elephant keeper section at the Kafue Release Facility to accommodate additional staff
— Upgrade the elephant keeper section at the Lilayi Elephant Nursery — the keepers are with the elephants 24 hours a day and these renovations will improve conditions for the staff

This is a significant effort by the Hadoop community and I am extremely awed and humbled of what we’ve been able to accomplish. You can learn more and donate directly to ProWildlife and the Elephant Orphanage Project here. The page is in German, so you might want to check it out in Chrome for it to auto-translate.

Thanks again to everyone who purchased one of our Charity Editions!
